In worship on Sunday I listened in awe as graduating senior Joshua Emmanuel Garcia-Matta sang Lauren Daigle’s “You Say”, one of the truly most beautiful songs I have ever heard. What a way to start the week of Commencement!
Garcia-Matta, from Alpine (TX) is the first male member of the USW Cheer & Dance Team. For the past two years Josh has been an active member of the First Presbyterian Church Choir, along with Women’s Soccer standout Corrina Ortiz, from Dallas (TX), who also will graduate this Saturday at USW, along with more than 200 other students of whom we are most proud. Both Josh and Corrina plan to relocate to Dallas to pursue careers in the Health Professions.
Saturday’s Commencement, like last year’s, will be virtual instead of live. But as well we did last year putting together something we had never done before, this year’s event promises to be even better and will be livestreamed at 10:00 AM (MT) through our USW Facebook page and also on YouTube. Here are those links:
The social wall is a page where staff, faculty, parents, etc., can post congratulatory messages to students before, during, or after the livestream. The messages will be moderated/approved in real-time to avoid anything inappropriate. Here are links to the social wall:

This year’s graduation will feature degree recipients at the bachelor’s, master’s, and doctoral levels. It also will showcase USW Alumna Dr. Melissa Mireles’ Commencement address and the presentation of an Honorary Doctorate of Humane Letters to David Shaw, CEO of Nor-Lea Hospital District, in recognition of his outstanding servant leadership to ensure that Lea County and its residents, including the USW Community, were afforded life-saving access to vaccination against COVID-19.
USW will host a virtual reception on Zoom earlier in the week for those students planning to participate in Commencement. Guests who wish to visit with or congratulate our graduates can join the link below at 6:30 PM (MT) on Thursday evening:

As proud as we are of this year’s graduates who persevered through what will likely be the most unusually challenging school year in the history of this institution, we also realize that there was never any doubt that together we would succeed. Our faith in God made possible what seemed like an impossible year. All the Glory is His!
