This is the Week it All Happens!

Caryn and I just returned from the Red River Athletic Conference Championship Baseball Tournament in Monroe (LA) that spanned 4 days. While it was quite a challenge to get there given all that was going on last week, the 10+ hour drive (one way) to the Sterlington Sports Complex was well worth it.

Our Mustang Baseball team played their hearts out and left it all out on the field to take fourth place in the RRAC. Spectacular hitting, bunches of double plays, and one of the best moments I have seen all year with third baseman Omar Baldenegro snatching a foul ball that was just barely within reach made for extremely exciting play. And did I mention we won one game in the bottom of the 9th by scoring 4 runs, all of which were necessary for moving USW forward in the bracket?

That win against all odds in game 2 of tournament play created momentum that carried over the next day and resulted in a 17-2 victory in only 7 innings. Multiple home runs in the games we won by designated hitter Nick Palomino and shortstop Gabriel Perez-Torres were especially fun to watch as they crushed pitches to send the ball over the fence and pile up RBIs.

As hot as it got mid-afternoon in Louisiana summer temperatures welcomed us back as we returned to Hobbs early yesterday evening and appear likely to prevail as we prepare for commencement on Saturday. The first will begin at 10AM and will focus on all undergraduate degree recipients. The second will start at 2PM and will recognize those graduates receiving advanced degrees, including doctoral degrees in Business and Education.

Saturday’s graduation ceremonies will feature the same speaker for both events. Special guest Dr. Uwem Equan  who earned a Doctorate in Business Administration from USW in 2021 will deliver both commencement addresses. The 2PM event also will provide a special opportunity to acknowledge local Hobbs businessman Paul Campbell for his lifetime of service to our community by bestowing upon him an honorary doctorate.

As exciting as baseball has been all semester there really is no match to the excitement of a college campus on graduation day. Way to go Mustangs for all your achievements. Graduation is why all of us who work here do what we do!
